国籍:美国 出生地:肯塔基州路易斯维尔 职业:创作歌手、音乐家、吉他手 生日:1978年4月27日 简介:James Edward Olliges, Jr. (born April 27, 1978), professionally known as Jim James or Yim Yames, is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band My Morning Jacket.
James grew up in the Highlands-Douglass neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. He attended St. Martha grade school and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1996. James briefly attended the University of Kentucky, studying art.
Prior to forming My Morning Jacket, James was the vocalist and guitarist of Month of Sundays, currently known as Mont de Sundua.
As the vocalist, frontman, producer and lead songwriter for My Morning Jacket, James has been instrumental in defining the sound of the band, from the haunting reverb of The Tennessee Fire to the amalgam of reggae, Americana, and folk that was the Z, which he co-produced with John Leckie. He was given an "Esky" for best songwriter in Esquire's 2006 Esky Music Awards in the April issue.
James typically plays rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, and occasional lead guitar on My Morning Jacket songs. He played the role of the band leader in the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, singing the song "Going to Acapulco", with Calexico as his backing band, which was featured on the soundtrack of the film. Rolling Stone listed James among their "20 New Guitar Gods" along with fellow My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel. In 2008, James, along with former My Morning Jacket guitarist and cousin Johnny Quaid, formed Removador Recordings and Solutions record label. The label, as described on its website, functions "on the simple principal of yielding the highest annual percentage of aural joy back into the hearts and minds of investors and shareholders with ease and convenience". He contributed vocals on The Decemberists' 2009 album The Hazards of Love.
On July 7, 2009, James released Tribute To, an EP covering George Harrison songs. A portion of the proceeds from the album will go to benefit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. The EP is available on yimyames.com as both a digital download and a physical CD/LP.
Jim James and the rest of My Morning Jacket played themselves in "My Morning Straitjacket", an episode of the animated television series American Dad!.
In 2012, Rounder Records released the Woody Guthrie tribute album New Multitudes which features songs covered by a variety of musicians including James (as Yim Yames) and Jay Farrar. James wrote an article on My Morning Jacket, discussing how the band got its name and growing up in Louisville, for the July 2012 issue of Louisville Magazine. Bandmates Patrick Hallahan and Tom Blankenship also wrote articles for the issue.
Jim James released his debut solo full length album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, on ATO Records on February 5, 2013. 从艺历程:Although chieflyknown as the frontman of My Morning Jacket, rocksinger and songwriterJim James played a wider role in indie rockduring the early21st century, appearing on albums byseveral artists(including Bright Eyes, M. Ward, America, and Bobby Bare, Jr.) whilepursuing a solo career. His approach on each album is different. Hisdebut was 2009's Tribute To, a short collection ofintimate GeorgeHarrison covers recorded shortly after the guitarist's death in 2001That said, his kaleidoscopic approach to his own material knows fewlimits, and his albums are so different from one another, they could beby different artists. Released in 2013, Regions of Light and Sound ofGod was a bright --even giddy--exercise in spirituality expressed bya truckload ofstyles and instrumentation, while its follow-up, 2016'sEternallyEven,showcased aspacy, psychedelic, jazzy approach to 21stcenturysoul and moody nocturnal funk infused with indie pop cool.
James is also a marked contributor to unique projects. He contributedto the New Basement Tapes, a group of studio collaborators whoissued a compilation ofunfinished, unreleased songs by Bob Dylantitled Lost on the River. Conceived of and produced byT-Bone Burnettother performers included Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, TaylorGoldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens.James resumed his role with MyMorning Jacket for 2015's acclaimed The Waterfall and toured insupport. In September of 2016, he announced the release of EternallyEven, co-produced with Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes). The gritty, tense, nine-song set was issued in November just before election day.James' next effort, Tribute to 2, issued in December of 2017, was anentirely different outing: lt was a collection of cover songs thatintentionallyreflected hope and blurred the boundaries of time andgenre. He interpreted songs bythe Beach Boys, AbbeyLincoln, Sonnyand Cher, Diane lzzo, Ray Noble and Al Bowlly, Elvis Presley, WillieNelson, Bob Dylan, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Six months later, James followed with Uniform Distortion, a collectionof original material inspired at large by The Last Whole Earth Catalogan oft-reprinted'70s-era compendium document focused on theenvironment, sustainable living, and D.lY. culture. Specifically, he wasdrawn to a photograph titled "llluminated Man" by Duane Michals. ForJames, the image made him reflect on society's near addiction totechnology and the wayin which we consume information -- as well asmisinformation.Writing to Michals for permission to use the image ashis cover shot, James was initiallyrebuffed, but sent the photographera follow-up email emphatically and poetically stating his motivationsand intentions for theimage. Michals relented. Co-produced byJamesand Kevin Ratterman at Louisville's La La Land Studio, he was backedby bassist Seth Kauffman (Floating Action) and longtime touringdrummer Dave Givan.Additional vocals were provided by LeslieStevens, Jamie Drake, and Kathleen Grace. In October 2018, Jamesissued an alternate version of the album, Uniform Clarity, in which herevisited most ofthe material from the earlier set in spare acousticarrangements.
James collaborated with Teddy Abrams, a composer and musicaldirector ofthe Louisville Orchestra, for an unusual and ambitiousproject, a fully orchestrated song cycle titled The Order of Nature inwhich James pondered the roles of hatred and compassion in thenatural world.James, Abrams, and the Louisville Orchestra debutecthe piece in April 2018; the initial performances were recorded, and analbum drawn from the second night ofthe run was released in October2019.
