Eight Cylinder Big Band is a modern big band jazz ensemble founded and led by German keyboardist, composer, and arranger Matthias Bublath, who serves as its musical director. The project is centered around original compositions. Built upon the traditional big band format, the ensemble integrates contemporary musical language into its compositions and arrangements. Its style incorporates elements of funk, hip-hop, R&B, and Latin music, resulting in a sound that balances structural clarity with rhythmic drive. While preserving the layered orchestration and arranging principles of the big band tradition, the music emphasizes groove and a contemporary sonic perspective. A defining characteristic of the ensemble is the integration of the Hammond organ into the core instrumentation, interacting closely with the traditional horn sections. This configuration expands the tonal palette and dynamic range of the big band, contributing to a distinctive sonic identity. The repertoire is primarily composed and arranged by Matthias Bublath, with a small number of adapted works. The music reflects a structured approach to rhythm, harmony, and orchestration. The ensemble consists of professional musicians active in the European jazz and related music scenes, whose long-term collaboration contributes to a cohesive ensemble sound and performance consistency. Eight Cylinder Big Band is committed to exploring contemporary musical expression within the big band tradition, continually expanding the possibilities of stylistic integration and sonic design through its original works.
