The Johnson Mountain Boys

国籍:美国 简介:The Johnson Mountain Boys were a popular bluegrass band throughout the 1980s from the Washington, D.C. area. Their style favored a more traditional approach to bluegrass than some of their contemporaries. They released two 45 RPM single records, one EP record, ten albums and toured widely, playing venues such as Madison Square Garden, The White House, the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Grand Ole Opry in the United States. Other tours took them around the world to Canada, England, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. The group was frequently recognized with nominations for Grammy Awards, International Bluegrass Music Awards, and awards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Many of the band's members are still active in other musical groups and settings. In 2020, the band was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. 从艺历程:Early Years: The Johnson Mountain Boys, initially known as "The Johnson Boys," formed in 1975 with Dudley Connell on banjo and Ron Welch on guitar. Eddie D'Zmura joined soon after on mandolin. Renamed by George Connell, the band's fictitious name referred to no real mountain. The group became a full five-piece in 1978 and released their first commercial record, featuring original compositions, in 1978. Members included Connell, Franny Davidson (later replaced by Richard Underwood), D'Zmura, David McLaughlin, and Gary Reid (later replaced by Mark Prindle). Eddie Stubbs joined as the main fiddle player in 1979. In 1979, Larry Robbins replaced Prindle on bass. The band was picked up by Rounder Records in 1980 and released acclaimed albums. McLaughlin left college in 1981 to rejoin full-time, replacing D'Zmura. Personnel changes occurred in 1986 with Marshall Wilborn and Tom Adams joining. Initial Break-up and Regrouping (1988–1996): The Johnson Mountain Boys announced their disbandment in 1987 but reunited part-time in 1989, performing fewer concerts annually. The longest-running lineup consisted of Connell, Stubbs, McLaughlin, Adams, and Earl Yager. They released another album, Blue Diamond, in 1993 and performed their last concert in 1996. Since the Final Break-up (Since November 1996): Members pursued independent careers. Connell became a guitarist and singer for the Seldom Scene and worked in archival roles. Stubbs moved to Nashville, played fiddle for various acts, and became a DJ and announcer. McLaughlin formed a duo, worked with other bands, and ran a recording studio. Adams played banjo in several bands and won awards. Wilborn was a member of Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper.
