Destroyer

Destroyer

外文名:Destroyer 国籍:加拿大 成员:Dan Bejar 简介:Dan Bejar started Destroyer as a solo project in Vancouver in 1995. His first album, We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge, was an electric folk record, setting the stage for the early Bowie comparisons that were certain to follow his particular vocal style. In 1998, Bejar added a rhythm section and took them into the studio for the first time. The resulting recording, City of Daughters, is a sparsely produced collection of catchy pop songs in which Bejar's increasingly obtuse lyrics really start to stand out. Thief, again recorded in Vancouver, was released in 2000, but by now the lineup had expanded into a quintet. The sparse production and the Bowie comparisons remained, but Bejar's cryptic lyrics and unique voice gave this rant against the music industry an original quality missing from many of that year's releases. 从艺历程:Based around band founder Dan Bejar's rakish vocals and obtusesongwriting persona, Destroyer has been in a constant state ofevolution since starting out in 1995. Bejar split his time betweenDestroyer and other bands ofnote like the New Pornographers andSwan Lake, among others, but Destroyer gradually grew from theirBowie-esque indie folk of their early recordings into far moreambitious experiments with arrangement, instrumentation, anddelivery. Bejar's laid-back yet theatrical songwriting presence sits atthe center ofevery phase Destroyer goes through, from the acousticleaning melodrama of2004's Your Blues to the cinematic lounge popof 2011's Kaputt to experiments with synthesizers and spoken word onalbums like 2020's Have We Met and 2022's Labyrinthitis. Dan Bejar started Destroyer as a solo project in Vancouver, BritishColumbia in 1995. His first album, 1996's We'l Build Them a GoldenBridge, was an electric folk record, setting the stage for the earlyBowie comparisons that were certain to follow his particular vocastyle. In 1998, Bejar added a rhythm section and took it into the studiofor the first time. The resulting recording, Cityof Daughters, was asparselyproduced collection of catchy pop songs in which Bejar'sincreasinglyunusual lyrics started to stand out.Thief, again recorded inVancouver, was released in 2000, but by then the lineup hadexpanded into a quintet. The sparse production and the Bowiecomparisons remained, but Bejar's cryptic lyrics and unique voicecame into their own as Destroyer continued taking shape. In themeantime, Bejar, along with Carl Newman ofZumpano, was one of thesongwriters responsible for the much-acclaimed New Pornographersdebut, Mass Romantic (Mint Records), released that same year. In 2001, Destroyer's fourth album, Streethawk: A Seduction, picked upright where Thief left off. His next release, 2002's This Night, was anoblique and melodic album that portrayed Bejar as a ranting, depressed singer. lt marked his first record for Merge. Arguably hisquirkiest material yet was captured on 2004's Your Blues. Bejarcollaborated with touring partners Frog Eyes on 2005's NotoriousLightning and Other Works, a six-track EP containing re-recordedversions of material from Your Blues with Frog Eyes as the backingband. He also contributed three songs to the New Pornographers'criticallyacclaimed Top 50 album Twin Cinema and spent the betterpart ofthat year on tour with the Canadian supergroup. February 2006saw the release of Destroyer's Rubies, a return to the guitar-basedsound ofThis Night with a touch of Streethawk-era drama. After devoting some more time to the New Pornographers, Swan Lakeand a collaboration with visual artist Sydney Vermont called Hello, BlueRoses, Bejar returned to the sanctuaryof his solo project and releasedhis eighth record, Trouble in Dreams, in March of 2008.The followingyear saw Swan Lake's second outing, Enemy Mine, as well as theambient Bayof Pigs EP (Destroyer). He contributed three tracks to theNew Pornographers' fifth studio album, 2010's Together, beforereleasing 2011's Kaputt, his ninth LP under the Destroyer moniker andfirst to appear on the Billboard 200. Kaputt's expandedinstrumentation included smooth saxophones and dabblings withambient electronics, and these additions along with markedly glossierproduction marked yet another phase of the band's progress. In 2013, Bejarissued the Five Spanish Songs EP, which featuredmaterial written bySpanish musician Antonio Luque of the band Sr.Chinarro.The following summer brought the well-received sixth NewPornographers record, Brill Bruisers, which included three Bejar-penned tunes.A second Hello, Blue Roses album appeared in February2015 (WZO), and Destroyer's strings- and horns-imbued, New Yorkthemed epic, Poison Season, followed that summer. lt returned theproject to the Billboard 200. In the spring of 2017, the New Pornographers released their first LPwithout Bejar (Whiteout Conditions).Appropriating the original title ofSuede's song "The Wild Ones," Destroyer emerged that fall with Ken. InJanuary 2020, Bejar presented his 11th album as Destroyer, Have WeMet, which he described as his belated version of a Y2K album, interms of both lyrical themes and musical personality, witharrangements heavyin vintage synthesizers.2022's Labyrinthitisembraced experimentalism and chaos, with songs that exploredgravellyspoken words, dissonant riffing, and a self-aware return to theearliest Destroyer styles with moments ofsarcastic, minimal folk-rock.
