Jodie DeSalvo has been making beautiful music since she was eight years old. As the daughter of an opera singer, DeSalvo’s passion for music spans generations. After beginning piano lessons at her elementary school DeSalvo announced to her mother, “I want to be a pianist.” That dream mixed with Jodie’s unmistakable talent and passion earned her a Carnegie Hall debut where she performed to a sold out crowd and won critical acclaim at the age of 28. This Thursday, July 12, Jodie DeSalvo will be taking the stage at the Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs’ Café Theater at the Promenade for one show performing “The Greatest Classics Ever Written.”
DeSalvo’s performance on Thursday offers the audience a more intimate experience than Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center where she has also played. While enjoying a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres, guests will be treated to a program that includes classics from Bach to Gershwin. “Every piece you will know, recognize and love,” promises DeSalvo.
DeSalvo has an impressive educational background that includes graduating from the Hartt and Manhattan schools of music and as a student of such noted teachers as John Browning, Gary Graffman, Jascha Zayde and Nina Svetlanova. Jodie found a way to pay forward all of the lessons taught to her when she began teaching at Seacrest Country Day School. At the time Seacrest did not have a formal chorus so Jodie began a musical program that spanned pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.
“She has had a tremendous impact,” says Erin Duffy, head of the Upper School. “Every year the number of students participating increases. Her enthusiasm encourages students who might never have tried music to sing.” More than half of Seacrest’s high school students sing with the choir. Jodie’s impact is evident when you walk through the halls of Seacrest Country Day School. Pianos at Seacrest seem to posses a magnetic field that draws students in. High school students appear unable to pass a piano in the school without one of them sitting down to play and a spontaneous group magically appearing around the piano to break into song. Outside of the television show “Glee,” that type of activity rarely occurs in high schools. With DeSalvo at the helm of Seacrest’s Perfoming Arts Academy, bursting into song is common among Seacrest students.
