It’s a sonata that stops you in your tracks, makes you hold on to each note, wondering where it will go next. Scarlatti didn’t write that many slow pieces, but this Adagio e cantabile is one of his best. Whether played on harpsichord or piano, the performer must imitate the extended breath control needed for the long lines Scarlatti creates. The left hand at first glance seems very bare (some players fill this in on the repeat; I don’t) and even has some consecutive fifths (totally against the rules of harmony), but I think Scarlatti knew exactly what he was doing, adding more notes where more emphasis is needed, and taking them away when not. Kirkpatrick describes it as ‘courtly flamenco music, rendered elegant and suitable for the confines of the royal palace’. It certainly is unique. from notes by Angela Hewitt © 2026 *** Follow Angela Hewitt: Facebook - @angela.hewitt.37 X - @HewittJSB Instagram - @angejsb TikTok - @angelajsb1685 BlueSky - @angejsb.bsky.social Follow Hyperion: Instagram / Facebook / X / Bluesky - @hyperionrecords #angelahewitt #hyperion #scarlatti #scarlattidsonatas,vol3
