Translation: A rose has grown from a tender root, just as the ancients foretold: it stemmed from Jesse and brought forth a flower in the depth of winter, at dead of night. Past and present elide in Jan Sandström’s memorable arrangement of Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen. The Swedish composer heads back to 1609 and Michael Praetorius’s four-part setting of the old German hymn, slowing it down so the tune seems to stretch out into time and space, suspended in a cloud of harmony. A small first choir sings the hymn tune, while a second choir, in eight parts, layers up a wordless bed of sound. The effect is spellbinding. from notes by Rebecca Franks © 2026 *** Follow The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge: Facebook - @TrinCollChoir X - @TrinCollChoir Instagram - @trincollchoir Follow Hyperion: Instagram / Facebook / X / Bluesky - @hyperionrecords #choiroftrinitycollegecambridge #stevengrahl #hyperion #praetorius #songforsnowacambridgechristmas
