This may be my stupidest or cleverest record, and I’m perfectly open to the possibility that both of those conditions are true. When I started working on it my intention was to take a batch of my jazz tunes and work them up in entirely synthesized orchestrations to surround my guitar with. I wanted to make a sci-fi jazz record. As I dug through tunes that would be appropriate, some wanted more of a “band” feel, and I always enjoy doing Claus Ogerman-like string arrangements, so on occasion I veered off my originally intended course. Still and all, this is a pretty sci-fi sounding record. Spacey synth sounds dominate, but seem oddly comfortable side-by-side with the “virtual orchestra” or “virtual band” tunes. For the most straight ahead tune – “Warp and Woof” – I took what was essentially a mainstream combo chart and orchestrated it with sounds that wouldn’t be out of place in an 8-bit video game. I went with the intentionally unreal, rather than settle for some imperfect approximation of the real. There are homages to some of my heroes included – Pat Metheny (“Stand Pat”), Charles Mingus (“C.M.”), and Bob Brookmeyer (“Grace(Period)” - at least in this particular version). There’s a pretty wide variety here – funky, swinging, ethereal – so if one tune isn’t to your taste, try another one. Hopefully everyone can find something to enjoy here!
