The song draws its inspiration from the short film-novella “Dongwan Siyue”, a collaborative work between Falsegods and Shanghai-based orthodox mystery writer Shi Chen. The title pays homage to the short story collection “The Locked Room Collector (Chinese song name translating as The Collector of Defeats)” by renowned Japanese honkaku mystery author Seiichiro Oyama. In that work, the “Locked Room Collector” is a mysterious figure who seems eternally youthful and inevitably appears whenever a rare locked-room murder occurs, effortlessly solving the case each time. In stark contrast to the invincible figure of the Collector, Li Dongqing, the protagonist of Dongwan Silue, carries a deep dream of music. Though gifted with the ability to compose beautiful melodies and possessing genuine dedication to his craft, he is ultimately manipulated by fate into becoming a tidal force that swallows one musician after another. Filled with confusion and frustration, he gradually sinks deeper and deeper into a chain of unintended sins. Long-time listeners of Falsegods will easily notice that this track is the one that comes closest to the band’s earlier sonic identity on the new album. Torrential drumming, intensely oppressive vocal expression, and spiraling, ascending guitar passages remain at its core. Yet amid the speed and sharp aggression, the band has introduced far more detailed and nuanced arrangements. As the album’s lead single, the track serves almost like an invocation—or a key—inviting listeners to step into the evolved creative world that Falsegods has forged.
