Matre (pron. Mat-Trey) is a unique and powerful voice born out of the L.A. underground Hip Hop scene. His music combines poignant, critical lyrics with a genre-bending blend of styles from classic boom-bap rap, to Latin rhythms, reggae, and afro-grooves, with a focus on empowerment and social transformation. His eclectic sound has taken him on a journey around the globe, touring extensively in the Americas, Europe and Africa, and sharing stages with artists such as Public Enemy and the Black Eyed Peas, while breaking ground with a series of unique recording collaborations with celebrated world music artists such as the late Benga music legend Ochieng' Nelly (Kenya), chart-topping duo Esto es Eso (Ecuador), and multi-platinum rapper, Paleface (Finland). An original member of veteran, Cali Hip Hop collective LA2theBay (2Mex, Busdriver, The Shape Shifters), Matre has released four solo albums and three group albums (English League, Paleface & Matre), enjoying collaborations with the likes of Prince Po (Organized Konfusion), Myka 9 (Freestyle Fellowship) and Pigeon John, among others. Matre is also the co-founder of Embassy Live, an international collective of artists focused on the transformative power of music and culture. The collective has grown to include collaborations with visual artists, film makers and activists around the globe, all dedicated to working in this spirit.
