2024.01.28--2024.06.16 Rush Off, a dialect term, means to run fast. In the Chaoshan region, this phrase is shouted by the relatives of those who have died in a foreign land when they are bringing the deceased's spirit back home. This is done to ensure that the soul can quickly return to their hometown without getting lost, similar to the phrase "souls, return home." As the debut album of the Ye Cao Liao, <Rush Off> aims to present a hybrid landscape of traditional and modern life. The ten tracks are interconnected, weaving together a migration history of people. Migration means leaving for a foreign land; in the contemporary context, leaving has become the new norm. However, Ye Cao Liao attempts to use this album to document and present their reflections on both foreign lands and their homeland in this new daily life. <Rush Off> is not rushed, because its narrative is so ordinary, like a lukewarm glass of water placed on a wooden table in a hometown courtyard. Yet this ordinariness seems to be extracted from the process of modernization by some machine, making it appear somewhat distant. This is the contradiction that <Rush Off> aims to present: a past present, or the mixed appearance of different eras. The album inherits the ancient Chaozhou tunes, interpreting them in a folk style, using old methods to address new issues. With ancient tunes at its core and a folk exterior, the noise experiments that embellish it serve as a contemporary response by revisiting old matters. Revisiting old matters subtly refers to the dilemma after leaving--confronting the world on the information plains. But this is only half of the landscape; the other half of the obscure discourse points to a postmodern rural syndrome brought about by migration. As a form of folk narrative, it is relatively restrained, avoiding excessive sentimentality. As a regional sketch, however, it contains modern facial features. As for what happens after rushing off? That is left for you to answer.
